Shterno (Star)

A rosette-type motif made up of six- or eight-pointed star. The name of the motif comes from the German “Stern” (star). The motif is used in woodcarving, inlay designs, woodburning, metal chasing, pysanka (Easter egg) designs, artistic weaving, and embroidery. A variation of the shterno in modern ornamentations is the five-pointed star. See also zvizdochky (stars), zirochky (starlets), zorky (stars).
