A centerpiece ornamental motif consisting of a circle with one or two bands around it. It is used mainly in inlay designs, woodburning and metal chasing. When combined, the vichko elements produce new motifs: ochka (eyes), kruzhaltsia (circles), kolesa (wheels), obruchky (hoops), kiltsiata (ringlets), kruhli (big circles).
It is mainly used in combination with other elements, and can be employed to create a number of centerpiece and border motifs. It can be placed in the centre of a centerpiece motif, or fill the space between other elements and motifs; it can also enrich large centerpiece and border patterns.
The name of the element can be interpreted in two ways: as a diminutive for “eye” (because it resembles eyes to some extent) or as a derivative of the word viko (lid of a butter, salt box, or trinket box, etc). This refers to chiseled round lids that could be the element’s ideogram.
