Lantsyuzhok (Little Chain)

An ornamental motif made up of a narrow strip of round, diamond, rectangular, graniform, and other elements that repeat rhythmically and resemble a woman's necklace (‘sylianka’) or chain, which is why the motif is called differently: ‘sylianka’ (necklace), ‘shnurochok’ (lace), ‘viazanka’ (band) or ‘lantsiuzhok’ (chain). It is seen mainly in inlay designs.
‘Lantsiuzhok sichenyi’ (notched chain) with crosshatched (‘ilchate pysmo’) elements is characteristic of carving. A motif consisting of a strip of zigzag- and bow-shaped elements that repeat rhythmically and create a ladder is called ‘retiaz’. The name comes from ‘careful binding’ – a perfect combination of complex links. The motif is seen in flat carving and metal chasing.
‘Lantsiuzhok,’ ‘lantsiuzhok sichenyi,’ and ‘retiaz’ motifs are used to frame, delimit, or close individual ornamental compositions.
