Morshchinka (Endwise Wavy Line)

An ornamental motif made up of narrow, very elongated triangles – jags – arranged in a row. It schematically resembles wrinkles on a gathered fabric, hence the name ‘morshchinka’. The motif can be seen in carving, inlays, woodburning, metal chasing, and pysanka (Easter egg) designs. Sometimes, this motif is called ‘keptari’ because of its resemblance to the jags used to decorate Hutsul keptar (short sleeveless fur coat).
