The simplest ornamental motif consisting of a line or a very narrow stripe. In carving, it can appear as a groove or channel (straight or wavy) created with a ‘haismus’ (‘fuchok’ – fine cutter). In inlay designs, it is a narrow insert made of dark or light wood, plastic, rubber, non-ferrous metal, or twisted wire. The name of the motif is derived from the German word ‘Streifen’, meaning a strip, strand, or edge. This motif is commonly used in carving, inlay, woodburning, metal chasing, pysanka (Easter egg) design, artistic weaving, and embroidery. It is typically employed for framing, encircling motifs, dividing compositional planes, and delineating ornamental groups.
