Zirka (Star)

An ornamental motif – a rosette with pointed ends – that resembles a star. The most popular in the Hutsul region are six- and eight-pointed motifs. In Soviet times, a five-pointed star appeared. The term shtern or shterno, which is common in the Hutsul region, comes from the German word “Stern” (a star). The motif is used in wood carving, inlay designs, embroidery, pysanka (Easter egg) designs, metalworks and woodburning. Modern ornamentation tends to complicated starry motifs – zirka v kucheriakh (star with curls), zirka v zubchykakh (star with jagged edges), zirka v gachkakh (star with hooks), zirka v koloskakh (star with an ear), etc.
