An ornamental motif in the form of a wavy line or ribbon resembling a moving adder. Sometimes, there is a forked tongue at one end of the motif and a conical point at the other. Mostly, it appears as alternately connected semicircles that snake around the perimeter of the composition.
The motif is used in wood carving, inlay designs, woodburning, and metal chasing. In modern products, it sometimes is transformed into a stylised floral motif.
