An ornamental border motif made up of one or two parallel broken lines. The slope angle of the lines is usually 45°. The ‘kryvulka’ motif can be arranged in a straight line or a circle and is sometimes accompanied by circular elements, triangles, horseshoes, etc., placed between the jags. The edges of the motif are usually crosshatched (‘ilchate pysmo’). The ‘kryvulka’ motif is in many ways similar to the ‘zubtsi’ (jags) motif. It is mainly used in flat carving, metal chasing, and pysanka (Easter egg) designs and less often in inlays. The most suitable technique for creating ‘kryvulka’ motif is engraving with ‘haismus’ (or ‘fuchok’ – fine cutter). There are several variations of ‘kryvulka’: ‘kryvulka prosta’ (simple wavy line), ‘kryvulka dubeltova’ (double wavy line), ‘kryvulka z tochechkamy’ (wavy line with dots), ‘kryvulka z zubchykamy’ (wavy line with jags), ‘kryvulka z pidkivkamy’ (wavy line with horseshoes), ‘pivkruhla kryvulka’ (semicircular wavy line).
A distinctive type of ‘kryvulka’ motif is the so-called ‘kryvulka svichkova’ (candle-shaped wavy line), which consists of a line bent at a right angle, where the gaps are filled with graniform elements resembling candles or with arches connected by circles at the bottom. In its upper part, ‘kryvulka svichkova’ motif has vertically placed graniform elements – small candles, hence the name.
