A rosette-type six-petal motif formed by the radius of a circle. It is mainly used in flat carving and metal chasing. There are three variations of this motif: mala ruzha (small or ordinary rose), pivruzha (half rose, or half of ordinary rose), and velyka ruzha (large rose, which is made up of seven ordinary roses). The motif usually ends with one or more concentric circles, sometimes featuring zubchyky (jags), drabynky (ladders) or other border motifs. The mala ruzha motif is mostly created by engraving or chip carving and velyka ruzha using engraving techniques often with the painting individual parts of the motif in black, red or brown. Individual parts of the motif may be crosshatched (ilchaste pysmo) or filled with closely spaced parallel lines. Some craftsmen cover the grooves with soot mixed with oil. As a rule, ruzha motifs are dominant in ornamental compositions, and often used in combination with cross motifs. Pivruzha is used as a complementary motif. The motif's name is derived either from the French “rosier,” literally – rose (Hutsuls call it ruzha), or from its resemblance to a wild rose flower - rozhi, ruzhi.
