Centerpiece ornamental motif based on the cross or cross-shaped forms. There are numerous variations of the cross as an ornamental motif in the Hutsul region. Almost all types of crosses are common here, including the slanting “pagan cross,” simple Greek, Latin, Orthodox, Old Believer, and Armenian. The most popular are the motifs of the Greek square cross and the Maltese equal-armed cross. Seven-pointed crosses with a rectangular (blunt-ended) arms are very typical for the Hutsul region. The cross arms may end with triangular, diamond-shaped, semicircular and circular elements, or sometimes with spiral ones: khresty v kucheriakh (crosses with curls), khresty v baraniachykh rozhkakh (crosses with ram’s horns), khresty v hachkakh (crosses with hooks), as well as crosses with axe-shaped ends. One of the authentic cross motifs found in the Hutsul region only is the khrest-triitsia (trinity cross). This seven-pointed figure is characterised by an organic combination of three crosses, of which the central one stands out for its size. The two side crosses are similar in shape, but much smaller. They grow out of the two lower arms of the central cross and fit into the outlines of its upper arms.
