This spiral motif is very common in the Hutsul region. The ornamentation has slightly twisted ends, which gives the impression of curls, hence the name. It is mostly used along with other elements and motifs (triangle, square, rhombus, circle) in a variety of combinations. There are three main types of curls: straight, tilted in opposite directions, bent in the form of arcs with their ends twisted inwards. As a rule, the curls are arranged according to the principle of mirror symmetry. This motif is used in wood carving and inlays with coloured wood or non-ferrous metal alloys. The curls may be one- and two-sided. The most common curl-type motifs include zhabky (frogs), kucheri v khrestakh (curls in crosses), baraniachi rohy (ram's horns), trykutnyky v kucheriakh (triangles in curls), kolo v kucheriakh (circle in curls), zirka v kucheriakh (star with curls), etc. Some contemporary craftsmen give the motif a lyre-like shape.
