Podviina Ryska is the simplest ornamental motif consisting of a line or very narrow strip. In carving, it often appears as a groove or trough, either straight or wavy, created with a ‘haismus’ (or ‘fuchok’ – fine cutter). In inlay, it is a narrow strip made from materials such as dark or light wood, plastic, rubber, non-ferrous metals, or twisted wire. The name of the motif is derived from the German word ‘Streifen’, meaning a strip, strand, or edge. This motif is commonly used in carving, inlay, woodburning, metal chasing, pysanka (Easter egg) design, artistic weaving, and embroidery. It is typically employed for framing, encircling motifs, dividing compositional planes, and delineating ornamental groups.
