Smerichky (Little Spruces)

An ornamental motif consisting of vertical lines, to which short segments in the shape of twigs are symmetrically inclined at the same angle on both sides. If the twigs are bent downwards, the motif is called ‘smerichky’, and if they are bent upwards, they are called ‘sosonky’. The  ‘smerichky’ and ‘sosonky’ motifs can repeat or alternate in the ornament. A variation of this motif consists of straight lines with zigzags or triangles symmetrically adjoining them on both sides. Another type of ‘smerichky’ and ‘sosonky’ motif is an ornamentation with horizontal elements in the shape of a strip that closes the composition around the perimeter.
‘Smerichky’ and ‘sosonky’ motifs are mainly created with wood carving and metal chasing techniques. Sometimes they are found in copper or brass inlays, as well as in pysanka (Easter egg) designs.
