Tarnytsi (Tarnished Patterns)

An ornamental border motif consisting of arches (semicircles) joined in a row with small circles at their ends. Sometimes, slightly larger circles are inserted in the centre of each semicircle. The ‘tarnytsi’ motif can be created from simple linear arches or arche-shaped strips with their ends joining each other, as well as arches that alternately intersect or are placed on either side of the central axis. Sometimes, instead of ‘kruzhaltsi’ (circles), ‘bovtytsi’, ‘bobryky’ or ‘koralyky’ are used in ‘tarnytsi’ motif. There are ordinary (simple) and double ‘tarnytsi’. The motif’s name comes from the name of a Hutsul wooden saddle of a semicircular shape, somewhat similar to the shape of the ornamental motif.
