Tsyhanska Dorizhka (Gypsy Path)

A border ornamental motif composed of a wavy line, groove, or stripe. It is made up of short segments placed at equal intervals in a ladder-like pattern, which are alternately (either from above or below) paired by semicircles. In the centre of each semicircle, there is a ‘dot’ or ‘circle’, sometimes straight extensions protrude from the centre of each semicircle, which end within the motif's band with ‘kruzhaltsia’ (small circles). If ‘tsyhanska dorizhka’ takes the form of a stripe, it can be enhanced with a line of small metal dots or ‘patsiorky’ (necklaces). It is most commonly found in carvings that feature inlay elements and serves as a closing motif. The name is abstract, derived from the image of endless winding roads along which wandering gypsies travelled
